National Park Adventure #1

posted in: Travel 0

My National Park Adventure is an awe-inspiring trip to the natural wonders of the west. This adventure will allow you to feel the wind in your hair and fill your lungs with a deep breath of the fresh air. The trip takes you from the picturesque Sun Valley in Idaho where you will spend time at the Sun Valley Lodge. Here you can explore the Sawtooth National Forest or Craters of the Moon National Monument. Then jump in the car and head to one of the most famous national parks in the country, Yellowstone. Embrace science as you can track down wildlife in the area, watch geysers erupt, study the rock formations and study the vegetation. While visiting this nature-wonderland, you can find a ton activities such as a river float, rock climbing or photography lessons. The last stop of the adventure allows you to check out the unspoiled grandeur of Glacier National Park in upper Montana. The towering mountains surround you as you pull into the Many Glaciers Hotel, and the clear, crisp waters invite you to dive right in. Disconnect from the world and get lost in the beauty of nature.

This is not a plan that I am selling, but a post to inspire you to explore different vacation options. With that being said, you can take this idea and adjust it to fit your needs, maybe by cutting nights or even destinations. I list the pricing after tax (except on some transport), and the prices are for July, during the peak travel time. The trip is calculated for a family of four, but I do list what a couple should expect at the bottom. So let's get started. Below are a couple maps of the trip and total cost:

Pricing Breakdown

As far as Transportation goes we'll start by discussing the airfare which I have budgeted as $400 per person based on the Open Jaw flights into Boise, Idaho and and returning from Kalispell, Montana. As usual, if you have points accumulated, that would be a great way to reduce the cost of this trip. I think that the best option of transportation, I would venture to say the only option, is with a car.

For the duration of the trip you will be using a renting a car to take you to point as well as to help you explore each of the national parks along the way as you can see the total budget for the rental car is about $916 dollars which for a 9-day vacation I believe is reasonable.

Explore the Sun Valley Lodge

Explore the Old Faithful Inn

Explore the Many Glacier Hotel

Hotel Summary: While each hotel does possess several similarities, I think each one stands out for its own special reason.

Sun Valley Lodge
Located at next to Sawtooth National Forest, this lodge is surrounded by beautiful terrain. It's a great option for a ski trip, as the slopes are near by, but is also a summertime treat. The resort has a wide range of activities including pools, hiking, biking, golf, fly fishing, boating and more.

Old Faithful Inn
Built in 1903-1904, the Old Faithful Inn is a considered the largest wood structure in the world. The hotel is located within Yellowstone National Park, and directly next to Old Faithful geyser. The hotel, which has stunning views and a dining room that will take your breath away, is open from early May to mid-October.

Many Glacier Hotel
The hotel sits on the edge of Swiftcurrent Lake and provides for fun-filled trip into the northern most part of the lower 48 states. Built in 1914, the hotel is surrounded by mountains and embraces the idea of getting away. There's no TV and spotty wifi, so you can focus on nature and family.

Itinerary and Activities

Above is an idea of what a possible itinerary would look like for this trip. Everything listed above is included in the price and covers all the activities that I have planned for the trip for four family members. So, again, if you see activities that don’t interest you, you could save money by skipping.

Food Budget

I have built-in about $140 per day in Idaho, but then $125 per day for the remainder of the trip. I think would be enough to get breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For couples, I've adjusted the amount spent on the flight, the activities, the food and the room rate. If you were to go, the prices would be similar to the chart below.

Thanks for stopping by and reading through my latest travel plan! If there's a region, or a trip, that you would want me to feature, just let me know!
